Kenyatta University delegation visit

University of Galway

The College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS) at the University of Galway recently hosted visiting staff from Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya, under an ERASMUS+ International Credit Mobility award.

This initiative stems from a North-South partnership between the College, Mayo University Hospital, Kenyatta University, Kericho County Ministry of Health (Kenya) and Brighter Communities Worldwide, an NGO based in Ireland and Kenya.

In addition to the staff visit, the ERAMSUS+ ICM award also supported the visit of six medical students from Kenyatta University, Nairobi, who completed two months of clinical electives at University Hospital Galway.

“During the staff visit we explored strategic objectives in teaching and learning, research and internationalization. We are now planning to set up international medical electives in Kenyatta University teaching hospitals during the summer months. This will offer supervised clinical electives in Africa to two University of Galway medical students each summer. At the same time, we agreed to facilitate Kenyatta University medical student summer electives in Galway. Other interests and priorities in teaching and learning, and research were identified, which are aligned to the partnership objectives and the strategies of the CMNHS and Kenyatta University. These will support internationalisation of our teaching programmes and address societal healthcare and public health challenges of relevance to sub-Saharan Africa.”
